...if no smart, properly tied tie with the top button done....whats the next best thing for you? e.g.

1. Clip on tie
2. Top button done up, no tie
3. Loose tie
4. Suit with a shirt
5. Other

Clip-on tie, then loose tie. After that probably a suit or uniform with some sort of silky scarf like an air hostess uniform.

Top button done up looks a bit silly without a tie.

1 and 4, with 4 being contingent on the woman wearing trousers. Not the skinny trousers shit, but actual pants that cover at least half the foot

I agree with a clip-on being a turn off. A loose tie is the next best thing, because it could be tightened.
