The Rise of Cruella
One sunny evening in September 2016 is when the story begins.
Sitting by her window, young Ella Rainwater was watching as the world passed by, people going to and coming from jobs, kids going to school, everyone it seemed had their own freedom, everyone but Ella. She was brought up in a middle class family in rural England, though her relationship with her mother Ursula was not exactly an amicable one, they were constantly at loggerheads with one another which was odd considering that it was just the two of them, Ella's father had absconded years ago with some of the family fortune, but had left enough to pay all of Ella's future schooling fees. Ella's mother was a strict disciplinarian and would berate and talk down to her daughter whenever the possibility opened up which was nearly all the time. Ella was a young girl of twenty, so she was perfectly entitled to leave her mother and find her own living arrangements, though when Ursula found out, she dismissed Ella's ambitions in a flash. "You are not going anywhere you spoilt little brat, the only place you are going is here in this house and that's final", Ursula had said to her one day when Ella spoke of future travel plans. Ella knew better than to cross her mother's path considering as previously stated that Ursula was a strict disciplinarian. Having been treated in such a way left a proverbial bitter taste in Ella's mouth, she despised her mother with every fibre of her being.
Whilst Ella was looking out of her bedroom window, she did not notice Ursula slithering into the room, almost stealth like, with a clothes hangar in her left hand. "Ella!" she roared, "get up off your bed and get ready, I am having some friends here this evening for dinner tonight and I want you to be properly dressed while they are here, is that understood?" Nodding, Ella replied, "yes mother. What is that in your left hand, mother? A trouser suit and tie?" Ursula nearly swelled up like a pufferfish, her anger levels had soared, "yes it's a suit and tie Ella. You are wearing this suit and tie tonight, and there will be no ands, ifs or buts about it. I expect you to be showered and dressed in half an hour." It was bad enough for Ella to have to put up with her mother's abusive behaviour, but now she had to wear a suit and tie for the sole purpose of a dinner party. The only time Ella had ever worn a tie was with her school uniform, but now she was faced with the idea of having to wear one outside of the school environment. When Ella found out that one of the guests was her school rival and her mother, she went ballistic, it was now even worse in her eyes that she would be cross dressing in front of her school rival and that word would soon spread about it in school.
"Mother, can I please wear a dress tonight instead of the suit and tie?" Without looking at Ella, Ursula swiftly dismissed her plea, "No Ella, you cannot wear a dress tonight, you are wearing the suit and tie that I have kindly provided you with, and you shall be grateful to me. Now, any more histrionics about wearing a dress, and you shall be grounded for a month, any added complaints and I'll make it two months." Ella knew now that Ursula was not to be trifled with at all, getting on her mother's bad side was like being thrown into the lion's den without any means of escape. After her shower, Ella picked up the dark navy blazer, beige slacks and powder blue tie, she was clearly not remotely amused or satisfied with having to wear such attire, but it was better than facing her mother's obvious volcanic temper. Getting dressed, Ella sighed, she knew that the evening was going to be hell, life with Ursula usually was in her opinion, but tonight was going to be particularly hard to manage. Looking at herself in the mirror, Ella was scarlet with embarrassment, the evening hadn't even started yet and already she felt she was looking like an idiot being dressed in menswear.
Walking into the room again, Ursula sighed, "Ella, hurry up, our guests will be arriving any minute now and I do not have time for your messing around. Stand still, I'll tie your tie for you." If wearing a tie was embarrassing for Ella, it was even more embarrassing having Ursula tying it for her, despite the fact that Ella knew how to tie one anyways. Flipping up Ella's collar, Ursula buttoned it up to the top, including the top button, and then placed the tie around Ella's neck like it was a leash. Smoothening out the creases from Ella's untied tie, Ursula exclaimed, "the cornerstone of any tie knot is decided by how well you wear the collar, it makes the tie more professional and presentable in front of company." Ella thought that what she was hearing was a load of hogwash, but was too scared to give back a smart aleck answer for fear of Ursula giving her an earful. As Ursula closed Ella's top button, Ella could feel the air draining out of her with each passing second, to her it was the most uncomfortable feeling ever. "Now, for the showpiece of the attire, the tie!"
"Darling, you may disagree with me totally, but women wearing a suit and tie is on the rise. Who knows, maybe in time you may like it yourself." Hearing these words come from her mother's mouth, Ella knew that this would most likely be a complete lie that Ursula had made up, she knew that Ursula was not beyond lies, though she did not know how well Ursula was good at lying. Unbeknownst to Ella, Ursula was quite the smooth operator, and often used her charm and wit to help her get out of any sticky situation, though she had honed her skills so expertly that there was hardly anyone who would even come close to matching her.

Re: The Rise of Cruella
Ella could not believe the situation she was in, she had to attend a dinner party that her mother was hosting, but more importantly, she was forced to wear a suit and tie despite the fact that she had several dresses that she could have worn instead. When Ursula had finished tying Ella's tie, she pushed it up tightly against Ella's collar which made Ella feel as if the wind was being drained out of her. "A double Windsor knot, perfect I think. A lot of the men I work with wear their ties like that" Ursula beamed, she was clearly over the moon about this dinner party. Despite the fact that they were not very wealthy, Ursula was an elitist snob who looked down on other people and thought that the world revolved around her. Hardly a day went by without Ursula bragging about something to the disdain of everyone who would listen, they all thought she was the most annoying person in the area, though Ella did not share her mother's snobbish manner.
At that moment the doorbell rang, and Ursula sprinted out of the room without any hesitation, she wanted the evening to go without any trouble as it would mean that she could use it as more fuel to the fire to her bragging about it to nearly the entire community, or at least to anybody who would listen. Looking at herself in the mirror one last time, Ella sighed, she knew that the evening was going to be a long one, especially considering she had to wear a suit and tie in front of everyone else, something of which she was highly embarrassed by. Reluctantly, she walked down the stairs so that she could be at the front door alongside Ursula.
When the first guest arrived, Ella suppressed a snigger when she noticed that the couple's daughters were both wearing suits and ties as well. The girl on the left had elected for a navy pinstripe skirt suit with a red tie in a half Windsor knot, and the girl on the right had chosen to wear a grey trouser suit with a pinstripe shirt and a light blue tie in a four in hand knot. To many they looked very professional, though to Ella, they looked idiotic. She believed that girls didn't wear a tie outside of a school uniform, but it was clear as daylight that this was not true.
The two girls glared at her with looks of venom in their eyes, they were not going to let Ella ruin their evening. After Ursula had escorted their parents into the living room, the two girls walked over to Ella and stood either side of her. "Well, well, well, if it isn't the famous Ella, wearing a suit and tie no less. I didn't think a loser like you could even afford one, isn't that right Natalie?" With a smirk on her face, the other girl replied, "it certainly is, Julia." The dinner party had only started a few minutes, and already Ella was fed up. The suit and tie felt idiotic, Julia and Natalie were already being annoying and critical of Ella's attire despite the fact they were similarly dressed, though Ella knew better than to cross her mother's path during the dinner party.
Ursula beamed with delight when she saw Julia and Natalie, and walked over to them. Ella was slightly bemused when she saw the three of them hugging because they had obviously met Ursula before, but Ella had never met Julia and Natalie. "You girls look fantastic in your suits and ties, pity Ella doesn't share your enthusiasm" which made Julia and Natalie burst into gales of laughter. After Ursula had returned to the primary guests, Julia and Natalie once again turned their focus on Ella, they were determined to embarrass her even further. "What sort of loser name is Ella, anyways Natalie?" Julia exclaimed, clearly not taking into account that Ella was standing not even ten feet away from her. With a giggle, Natalie replied, "such a loser name!"

Re: The Rise of Cruella
Her eyes filling with tears, Ella ran up the stairs to her bedroom without any hesitation, she had been highly embarrassed and her self-confidence was shattered even further, it was bad enough having to wear a silly suit and tie, but now she had been the subject of a verbal onslaught from Julia and Natalie. Locking her bedroom door behind her, Ella walked over and put her head in her pillow and started breaking down crying. "It's not fair!! Everyone thinks I'm the least important person in the entire world, nobody seems to like me, but I shall change all of that. Now, I just need a new name, something that strikes fear into the hearts of everyone, something that will be iconic in years to come." Contemplating it, Ella eventually decided on Cruella DeVil, "yes, it's magnificent, a name that everyone will one day fear to speak.
The newly self-christened Cruella was all about being more powerful than anyone else, and would not let anyone step in her way. Climbing out of her bedroom window, Cruella made her way down the street to the bus stop. She was greeted by many of the people on the bus that knew her, but chose to ignore them completely, she had a plan of action in her head, and nobody was going to disturb her with silly questions or anything like that. Eventually the bus pulled into the bus stop, and Cruella got out, she was a woman on a mission, her transformation into one of the most feared women was about to begin.
What Cruella's mother did not know was that Cruella had a secret hairdresser called Michelle, and Cruella was her most important client. Knocking on Michelle's door, Cruella smiled, this was just the beginning of her transformation, there was now something even more important on her mind. "Michelle, I need you to do me a little favour, I want you to dye my hair, but not just any normal dye job." Whispering in Michelle's ear, Cruella told her what she wanted, and Michelle nodded, "coming right up." Just as Cruella was about to sit down, her phone started ringing. Looking at the caller ID, Cruella sighed, it was Ursula. With a smirk, Cruella walked over to the nearest window and hurled out her phone. Upon hearing it smash, Cruella beamed with satisfaction, that would eliminate calls from her mother for a little while anyways.
Due to the fact that the newly self-christened Cruella was her most important client, and a very important one at that, Michelle always made it her job to look the part for such an important client. "Hang around there for a minute or two, Cruella, while I get changed." She returned a couple of minutes later wearing a black tuxedo, black skirt and a tailcoat with white gloves. Taken aback by Michelle's new look, Cruella exclaimed, "Michelle, darling, you look gorgeous in that fantastic tuxedo, so professional."

Re: The Rise of Cruella
Three hours later Michelle had finished doing Cruella's hair, it was a very productive and hard working three hours though, and when she had finished, she had a satisfied smile on her face. Looking at her work, Michelle stood back in awe, "Cruella, let me take off that apron off you and allow me to unveil the new you."
After she had taken off the apron, Cruella looked at herself in the mirror, her hair was white like ice on one side, and the other was black as coal. "Wow, it looks gorgeous, you have really outdone yourself Michelle." Chuckling, Michelle replied, "I have, haven't I? Now, for your second surprise." Wondering what it might be, Cruella sat down in one of the chairs and waited.
Her eyes gleamed when she saw Michelle walking into the room with a black and white three piece pinstripe suit and a white tie with black spots on it, the tie resembled that of a Dalmatian's fur. "Michelle, it's magnificent, it screams bold, it's ravishing. Time to get rid of this silly suit and tie I am currently wearing, and change into this wonderful suit and tie that you have so kindly given me."
Getting changed, Cruella never felt more confident in her life, she was wearing a suit and tie that she actually liked, and she had undergone a major transformation that everyone would soon see. Buttoning up her shirt, Cruella placed her tie around her neck and started tying it with more confidence than she had ever experienced previously. Pushing it up to her collar, Cruella turned down her collar so that her tie was resting snuggly against it, making sure to close her top button. The slacks were very comfortable around Cruella's waist, they had obviously been made to her measurements. Putting on a pair of cotton socks, Cruella slipped into a pair of luxurious Italian loafers that were clearly very expensive, and then picked up the waistcoat. "This is a fantastic waistcoat Michelle, you must get me in touch with your tailor." The final piece of the sartorial transformation was the blazer which Cruella thought, "this blazer is magnificent."
The first person Cruella wanted to see her new transformation was her mother, Ursula had always been speaking down to her so it was easy for Cruella to decide to pick her to see her new hairstyle. Putting on a beanie hat to cover her hair, Cruella then walked out of the apartment, she was a woman on a mission, she did not want anyone else but Ursula to be the first person to see her transformation.
Walking out of the apartment, Cruella made her way back onto the street. Despite it being 9pm, it was still rather busy which was a shock, she figured most people would be at home for the rest of the night. Feeling as though she was being watched, Cruella sighed when she realised that it was a woman with a Dalmatian who had clearly taken offence to Cruella's rather peculiar attire. Recognising her, the woman exclaimed, "you're Ella Rainwater, I know your family quite well. I am Carla Swift" This was surely a lie as Cruella had never seen or met this woman in her life.
Cruella had a sinister gleam in her eyes, "Ella Rainwater is dead, it's Cruella DeVil now."" The woman stood back in shock, "Cruella DeVil?" Straightening her tie, Cruella nodded, "yes." Carla was so taken aback in terror that she and her Dalmatian ran away without looking back. The feeling of fear, Cruella pondered, it was clearly going to be a powerful force in her future.
Arriving back at her house, Cruella shimmied up the side so she could enter her room without arousing suspicion. She had left her bedroom window open enough so that she could get in without it making any noise. Closing it, Cruella then unlocked her bedroom door and threw the beanie on her bed, now was the moment of truth, she was going to stun her mother and everyone at the party. Walking out of the room, Cruella hummed as she made her way down the stairs. Upon reaching the front hall, she looked around to see everyone's reactions but they had not seen her yet. Suddenly there was a loud noise and the shattering of plates and glasses, Ursula had seen her daughter's rather eccentric new look.
Hearing the noise, the rest of the guests walked out into the hallway to see what all the furore was about. They all stood back in shock, though nobody was shocked as Ursula. "Ella?" With an evil laugh, Cruella replied, "Ella is dead, it's Cruella DeVil now."
