Who wore it best? A-Z

Been asked to do this after making a similar list in the bow ties section, in case you don’t read it.
Regular ties have never quite held the same appeal to me as bows - but I do enjoy the occasional sighting! This was far harder, as I hadn’t enough ladies saved to fill the alphabet. Had to backtrack a bit to find a few more, discovering a whole lot of online photoshopped pics along the way. I’ve tried to eliminate any of those.
That said, most of these are ones I will keep in the collection from now on.

As with bow ties, the collar fit is important to me. The majority of tie wearers pay too little attention to that detail to keep my interest.
And girls wearing them just to be quirky or different do nothing for me - there must be an element of elegance, of dressing up.
For much the same reason uniforms usually don’t impress me, with the added problem of the ‘one size’ approach often affecting the tightness of the collar and general fit. There are exceptions, of course.
Skinny ties aren’t my thing either. I prefer some shape to them, especially a with a nice crease to accentuate the knot.
And again, if the tie’s not knotted they might as well not be wearing one at all as far as I’m concerned...
Anyway, here’s what I ended up with:

A: Amy Schumer

Very nice suit and overall fit.



B: Bo Derek

Top quality clothes, and dark satin blouses are lovely - irresistible when paired with a nice tie!



C: Claudia Schiffer

Once more ‘C’ spells nostalgia. Had the collar been tighter this would’ve been a killer instead of merely ‘good’ - actually, it was good enough to make me buy the Sep ‘92 issue of “ELLE”, which had it as the cover pic…




D: Deborah Harry

Very proper outfit from a 1978 Top of the Pops performance.



E: Emma Shaplin

She’s worn ties on several occasions and always look great in them.



F: Fergie
She’s a repeat offender in the tie wearing department, which of course is a good thing!



G: Gisele Bundchen

Just look at that pose - a wonderful combination of femininity, masculinity and confidence.



H: Holly Hunter


I know her collar was quite loose in this shoot, but no matter - I really like the look from this angle.



I: Ivana Trump

Perhaps not the best wearer, but a really good example of how to make a tie work without a shirt.



J: Jennifer Tilly

That fit and that pose speak for themselves.



K: Kim Wilde

Once more, the wonders of satin blouses and ties. From her 2006 re-release video of “You Came”, where tie-clad female assistants even help button her blouse and straighten her tie amidst general primping. Great stuff.



L: Lena Philipsson

This Swedish singer likes to occasionally suit up for the stage. Or this photoshoot.



M: Monica Bellucci

Just a beautiful picture overall.



N: Nicole Kidman

Has made a few appearances in ties, but this older pic gets the tightness right.



O: Olivia Munn

Sleeves and trousers optional to pull off the look!



P: Paula Abdul

Shame there’s so much movement (and quick edits) in the all too brief segment of the “Opposites Attract” video, but in the days long before internet I was always happy when MTV showed it. Not every day you got to see a gorgeous girl dance in a suit!



Q: Qi Shu (Usually styled Shu Qi, though not on IMDB)

All right, this is pushing it. Not only had I resort to the asian ordering of her names, it’s a look far too loose for my liking. But it felt bad to leave a single letter out when I had the opportunity to not do so. But it’s undoubtedly a suit and tie combination, from a Home Decor advertl.



R: Rachel Hunter

I love the combination of a tie with an otherwise ultra-feminine look.



S: Suzanne Somers

Wins solely on how often, well, and natural she sported the necktie look on “Step By Step”, mainly in season 2. The hardest part was choosing an example!




T: Toni Braxton

The outfit may suffer a bit from what I think of as “the curse of the 90’s collar”, but it looks so cozy and comfy on her I don’t mind…



U: Uma Thurman

Very few options for this letter here as well, but once more Uma comes to the rescue with a stylish look from “The Impostors”.



V: Veronica Ferres

Had a hard time with ‘V’ too, but Veronica wore a few nice suits in “Jack’s Baby”, a film I’ve unfortunately only seen snippets from.



W: Wendy Richard

Another double from my previous list, but she was enough of a tie aficionado to be invited to the Tie Maker’s Guild’s ‘top wearer awards’ at least three times in the nineties.




X: Ximena Navarrete

Amazingly, I had little difficulty with this one!




Y: Yuuga Yamato

The cut of the jacket and the size and length of the tie are all just about perfect, but what else do you expect from a professional male impersonator?



Z: Zoe Saldana

The one exception from my “no loose ties” rule. It’s just too nice not to like. Plus, you can easily imagine her buttoning up and tighten it…

Glad to see this post in the necktie section! Here are my choices and hope you can enjoy them. I find it really hard to fill all A-Z so these are just 16 of them and I may or may not supplement the missing letters later. It's because many of my collections come from private accounts on Instagram or from online historical archives that are claiming their credits. Plus most of the people in my collections are not celebrity or never shown in public news or so, so it's kinda unclear to me if showing them here is appropriate. My personal taste is more towards conservative skirt suit and uniform style. A strict and tight necktie is indispensable in all circumstances.
